 Mt. Calvary History:

In the late months of 1946, the Mission Board of the Kansas District Lutheran Church Missouri Synod sent neighboring pastors into Wamego to determine need and itnerest for Lutheran services. Services were first held January 27, 1947. For reasons unknown, services were discontinued after four months.

Twelve men met at the home of Ray Prell on Sunday, August 3, 1947 to seek ways of resuming services. The meeting was presided over by the late Pastor O.B. Hussmann, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Topeka. Sixty-two persons were in attendance at his first service on August 24, 1947. A Sunday School was started in October with ten children. Fifteen children took part in the Christmas Program.

On January 25, 1948, a permanent congregation was formed. During the District Convention in 1948, the congregation affiliated with the Missouri Synod. In April 1950, ground was purchased at the corner of 6th and Chestnut Street, Wamego. Ground Breaking was in April and Dedication was in November 1954.

A second milestone was reached Sunday, April 25, 1982 when the mortgage was burned.

From July 1948, with 69 baptized and 48 communicant members, the LORD has blessed us with continued growth. In 1994, the congregation purchased the house at 605 Chestnut which became the “Fellowship Center”. A work office and pastor’s study was housed in this building, as well as room for the Adult Bible Study. The High School Youth Group met in the basement.

In the Fall of 1998 the 311 member congregation purchased a 20-acre tract of land at the northwest corner of Say Road and North Hwy. 99. Planning for the new structure began in January 1999, with Groundbreaking on August 29, 1999. Our first worship service in the new building was held Saturday, April 1, 2000 and on April 30, the building was “Dedicated to the Service of God”.

At present (Dec. 2008), our membership has grown to 519 members. We have three weekend services, Saturday at 6:00p.m., and Sundays at 8:00 and 10:30a.m.
